ANNOUNCED! CinemaAttic and Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival team up for a Night of Jazz & Short-Films. 🎷🎺 🎶 🎹 To celebrate the festival’s 40th Anniversary we bring together animated, documentary and fiction Jazz-related films for a special one-night show. This is a free event. Limited seats available ⚠️ Secure yours before they’re gone via Eventbrite!

Well trained on the ancient craft of improvisation, Cinemaattic collective brings a unique collection of international short films to celebrate 40 years of Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.

Films that capture the panic before auditioning at the famous Apollo Theatre, an animated radiography into Woody Allen’s preoccupations and the funny happenings in a post-concert awkward reception are part of the short-film programme. Documentary films bringing the traditional sounds of Mali and Burkina Faso and short docs on Jazz maestros also complete a tailored selection to celebrate the festival’s 40th edition.

Pencil doon folks,
Saturday 21st July at Teviot Row Basement, from 6.30pm
Free Entrance, Limited seats available, Register via Eventbrite

FILMS

APOLLO LEGEND — Ricky Montalvo, Bernadette Tuazon, Evan Vucci
Since 1934, the well-worn stage at The Apollo Theater has been one of the world's greatest launching pads for phenomenal talent, catapulting the likes of James Brown and Ella Fitzgerald to international stardom. Thousands of contestants audition each year, with the hopes of facing the famously mean Apollo audience, described «like a bunch of pit bulls eating raw meat.» We’re gonna take you on a trip to the guts of the famous Apollo theatre…

SAY WHAT! A Geriatric Proposal — Aaron Weinstein
At a post-concert reception, a young jazz musician tries to survive aggressive grannies and other terrifying beasts

WOODY & WOODY — Jaume Carrió
Woody Allen has gave us some of the most precious films made in New York. In some cases being New York the protagonist of these films. For the past 18 years, with rare exceptions, Woody Allen has spent every Monday night playin’ jazz as an amateur clarinetist. He even skipped the 1978 Academy Awards, where he won an Oscar for Annie Hall, in order to play his regular gig in midtown Manhattan. Love, religion, death, sex… These are some of the vital worries and thoughts that used to concern the director of 'Manhattan' and that still concern the Woody of nowadays. A neurotic and brilliant author; now and before. A genius who actually can only have one interlocutor up to him: himself.
DUANE EUBANKS — Kal
Duane Eubanks simmers. Percolates. The jazz trumpeter/ composer/arranger/producer is a multi-talented force whose fiery blasts and sweet distinctive sound carry his horn into a musical space that defies categorization. In this short doc by American filmmaker Kal, jazz connects Duane to the continuum of great musicians who came before him and those still to come.

BAMAKO PLAY — Anders S. Jepsen
With the unrest in Burkina Faso and Mali as a backdrop, “Bamako Play” follows the critically acclaimed Danish band The KutiMangoes as they meet and collaborate with local African musicians. How does the Western and traditional African music come together as they record a new album? Meanwhile, a dwarf interprets the music through modern dance and a traditional Malian dance troupe practices and performs. It’s joy, it’s dancing, and it’s a musical ecstasy.
