In the last 40 years science fiction has become ‘science fact’.
Life is intensifying. The technological revolution is becoming faster and the ability to access information has grown to the point that it can very easily become overwhelming.
The environment and our interactions with it has changed beyond comprehension. The impact it is having on each generation exponentially grows in both good and bad ways. What has not changed is the fundamental human being. We evolve at a much slower pace than technology and our responses are still the same. It is the triggers that have become radically different.
We forget that we are designed to be either running away from sabretooth tigers or fighting them. It is the same reaction we have when we get an email from our boss or a difficult client. This is the the stress response that leads to full ‘Fight, Flight or Freeze’ mode that was so vital in ancient times, but not so useful now.
We are well aware of various sources of stress such as the modern sedentary lifestyle. Not moving, the muscles in the back get tight and our ability to take a full breath can become compromised. Our body stiffens, tightens and that starts to effect our ability to think as well as the quality of thoughts.
Essentially it is a loop: the mind effects the body and the body effects the mind.
We start to see the many sources of stress, yet we forget how incredibly resilient we are as individuals and a species. We outlasted those sabretooth tigers that we used to run from or fight!!!
We just need to explore and find it again.
In this talk Mark Appleford will explore more of how stress and modern living can impact on us. How the mind/body connection is so important in managing stress. Drawing on ancient wisdom and modern thinking he will share practical insights and skills that can help us relax and reconnect to our resilience.
