The Introduction to Counselling Skills is a three day standalone course to introduce the basics of counselling skills. Whilst it is a pre-requisite for those entering the Foundation Year programme, it is open to all and recommended for anyone considering counselling and psychotherapy training. The primary aim of the course is for participants to understand the theoretical base for core counselling skills through experiential learning and to be able to relate these concepts to Transactional Analysis practice. The course is offered by Physis Scotland as a stand alone course and/or as a component part of training that meets COSCA’s requirement for counselling skills training as a pre-requisite to entering the Physis Scotland COSCA diploma course.

On completion of the three day course participants will:

understand the core concepts that underpin counselling skills
be able to apply skills in practice within a developmental framework
relate skills to the practice of TA

have practiced and developed skills in:

active listening
responding reflectively
summarising
open and closed questioning
appropriate self disclosure
immediacy
responding to blocks to contact
recognising boundaries
confrontation and challenge
empathy
working with resistance

Tutors: Fiona Cook and Fiona Firman
