Join LingSoc for a presentation by Dr Janet Beck of Queen Margaret University about Speech and Language Therapy research at Queen Margaret University!

Abstract:

Communication is at the heart of human society, mediating social interaction and access to education, employment and most of the services on which we rely, yet almost 20% of people will experience some kind of communication difficulty during their lifetime. Supporting people to optimise their communication skills through whatever channels are available to them is crucial in preventing marginalization or exclusion from society. Speech and language therapists (SALTs) work with people of all ages who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

This talk will provide an introduction to speech and language therapy as a profession, and an overview of current clinical research at Queen Margaret University, focusing on some current areas of phonetic and linguistic research to show how this can enhance clinical practice. Specific examples include the use of ultrasound tongue imaging for assessment and treatment of speech sound disorders, and the development of smartphone facilitated voice monitoring to reduce the risk of occupational voice disorders.
